6/12/2023 0 Comments Eleanor and hick book reviewThe Eleanor and Franklin Roosevelt assignment came at a good time for Lorena. When she’s sent to cover FDR’s campaign, she’s become one of the best reporters for the project. She makes a place for herself in a predominantly male career. When Hick leaves that job, she gains some education and gets a job as a Journalist working her way up the newspaper ladder. As a teen, Hickok strikes out on her own, she works in a circus, which may sound cliché, but the things she describes are fresh and thought provoking. She is raped by her father and then sold to farming neighbors for her work, from which he takes her wages. Thus we have the background of Lorena from childhood. Bloom takes a different approach telling the story from Lorena’s point of view. After the election Hickok moved into the White House and reported from there, from the room next to the First Lady’s.Īlong with many of you, I have read biographies about Eleanor Roosevelt that give light to her reporter-lover Lorena Hickok. Hick’s (as she was known) feelings for the next first lady deepen into intimacy and love. In the company of the next president and future first lady she developed close friendships, especially with Eleanor. Lorena was not instantly captivated by Eleanor because she found her idealistic. Lorena met Eleanor in 1932 when she traveled with ER and FDR reporting on Franklin Roosevelt’s first presidential campaign. White Houses by Amy Bloom is the story of Lorena Hickok and Eleanor Roosevelt.

Thomas said that he felt like he had made strides with Thiel, though his effort was cut short earlier this month, on March 8, when he died tragically. “I’m trying to influence him in ways to show him my heart, and show him how it affects myself, certain individuals, himself.” “I don’t side with him on a lot of political things, but I understand him,” Thomas told me in an interview last November. Jeff Thomas, a model and social media influencer who was recently in a long-term relationship with billionaire Peter Thiel, said he spent much of his time with the tech mogul working to persuade him away from his increasingly aggressive pursuit of a culture war - a war that Thomas warned was blowing back on their community. 6/12/2023 0 Comments Bloom empathyWithout empathy, Bloom insists, our decisions would be clearer, fairer, and ultimately more moral. He demonstrates how empathy distorts our judgment in every aspect of our lives, from philanthropy and charity to the justice system from medical care and education to parenting and marriage. We are at our best when we are smart enough not to rely on it, but to draw instead upon a more distanced compassion.īasing his argument on scientific findings, Bloom makes the case that some of the worst decisions made by individuals and nations - who to give money to, when to go to war, how to respond to climate change, and who to imprison - are too often motivated by honest, yet misplaced, emotions. It muddles our judgment and, ironically, often leads to cruelty. It can motivate kindness in individuals that makes the world better. Far from helping us to improve the lives of others, empathy is a capricious and irrational emotion that appeals to our narrow prejudices. In “Against Empathy,” Bloom reveals empathy to be one of the leading motivators of inequality and immorality in society. Nothing could be farther from the truth, argues Paul Bloom. Many of the wisest policy-makers, activists, scientists, and philosophers agree that the only problem with empathy is that we don’t have enough of it. We often think of our capacity to experience the suffering of others as the ultimate source of goodness. Bodhipaksa has been meditating since 1982 and teaching since around 1989. Paul Bloom, the Brooks and Suzanne Ragen Professor of Psychology Bloom’s stance against empathy is only against a certain kind of empathy, and his arguments don’t apply to this other form, which happens to be the kind that’s most important in the practice of compassion. 6/12/2023 0 Comments Ichigo orangeAt first skeptical, Naho begins to believe the letters as they accurately predict events. This is often considered to be the greatest literary mystery. However, Homer’s works are designated as epic rather than lyric poetry, which was originally recited with a lyre in hand, much in the same vein as spoken-word performances.Īll this speculation about who he was has inevitably led to what is known as the Homeric Question-whether he actually existed at all. The stories have repetitive elements, almost like a chorus or refrain, which suggests a musical element. Homer’s style, whoever he was, falls more in the category of minstrel poet or balladeer, as opposed to a cultivated poet who is the product of a fervent literary moment, such as a Virgil or a Shakespeare. A variation on the group idea stems from the fact that storytelling was an oral tradition and Homer compiled the stories, then recited them to memory. Some scholars believe him to be one man others think these iconic stories were created by a group. The Greek epic poet credited with the enduring epic tales of The Iliad and The Odyssey is an enigma insofar as actual facts of his life go. He is famous for the epic poems The Iliad and The Odyssey, which have had an enormous effect on Western culture, but very little is known about their alleged author. The Greek poet Homer was born sometime between the 12th and 8th centuries BC, possibly somewhere on the coast of Asia Minor. 6/11/2023 0 Comments Consider me becka mack online freeWhile she likes including all of the fun stuff like humor, heat, and alpha men that are secretly teddy bears, her writing comes from a place of heavy emotions, and often cannot resist allowing these emotions to seep into her pages.īecka loves writing swoon-worthy romance with relatable and lovable characters, loads of humor, and a healthy dose of drama while on the way to a happily ever after.
